What is it? Well,

As you may well know, meditation has been around for thousands of years and can promote an abundance of benefits both mental and physical. Everything from increased awareness, improved sleep, increase in happiness to stress reduction, and even slowing down the aging process. It truly is something that everybody should adopt in their lives from a very early age if possible.

No matter what the gain’s meditation provides, some people will always find a reason to not do it. They will claim they don’t have the time, it’s too hard to do, it gets boring after a while, list goes on and on!

The History of Binaural Beats

The science of how BB actually work was discovered by a Prussian physicist and meteorologist by the name of Heinrich Dove. In 1839 he discovered that if slightly different frequencies were played separately to each ear, it would cause a person to perceive hearing an interference beat played at the same rate.

Still – the discovery would remain unknown until the early 1970s. It was in 1973 that Doctor Gerald Oster brought BB in the general mainstream awareness. He introduced it in a paper that he submitted by the name ‘Auditory Beats in the Brain’, which was published in a journal by the name ‘Scientific American’.

In the paper, he confirmed that it is indeed possible to induce certain physiological behavior and changes which are made apparent by measuring the BB spectrum.

How Do Binaural Beats Work

The question most newbies ask is ‘How do BB work?

They assume that since that’s it’s pretty much become mainstream in the last 5 years it must be a new age trend fad. On the contrary, BB has been around for hundreds for centuries and is a naturally occurring science.

Stay with me for this short duration I’ll explain it more.

Although the ability to create BB music has only existed for a century at most due to the leap in technology, the use of the natural side of things goes back the last few thousand years.

Before the science of today was able to prove that our brains could be en-trained through the repetition of sound, ancient cultures were already aware of this phenomenon.

Having said that, past societies equally didn’t refer to the concept as Binaural beats but instead understood it to be simply a repetitive and  powerful sounds known to promote healing and benefits believed to be of a spiritual nature.

Ancient tribes knew that to induce these benefits they had to obtain beats of roughly 4.5 beats per second. A consistent beat of this kind would produce a trance like state for whoever was listening as the individuals brain would also shift into the same frequency as the 4.5 beats per second.

The state achieved would be that of an alpha brainwave state – we will discuss this is more detail shortly. The bottom line is these beats were able to provide the tribes with a feeling of abundance and well being.

Certain eastern religions and practices to this day still use repetitive chanting and rhythmic drumming to induce certain hypnotic brainwave frequencies for healing, complete awareness and growth of a spiritual nature. See for yourself!


The Science of Binaural Beats

The word binaural simply relates to two ears. The image below represents the exact process of what happens.

In order to get the best advantage from BB you need to listen to them using headphones/ear phones so that the full effect can be focused upon each ear. Whilst listening to BB, a different sound frequency is sent to each ear. Upon hearing these the brain then produces a physiological response.

It actually perceives a third tone upon hearing the first two tones at different frequencies. It does this due to the mathematical difference between the first two frequencies. The brain then follows along at the new frequency and produces brainwaves at the exact same rate of Hertz HZ of difference between the first two frequencies.

The resulting frequency will then fall into certain brainwave state based on the amounts of Hertz Hz that is created. We will discuss the different states a bit further along.

For example: If a 210 Hertz frequency can be heard on the right ear and 215 Hz to the left ear, the brain will process both frequencies and produce the new frequency of 5 Hz. The 5 Hz is simply the frequency difference between them.


Brainwave States & Their Benefits

As discussed above; the difference resulting in the frequency of each ear determines the produced Hertz. Logically, the greater the number of Hz produced the more active the state.

Oppositely the lower the number of Hz produced then a much lower activity state is produced which would put the user into a much deeper brain state.

Note: The benefits mentioned are general guidelines.
The states mentioned contain frequencies that vary in range. As a result different results will be experienced by the individual in the low, middle and high areas of each brainwave state.

OK – We’ve given you the science and benefits behind it all and you should now have a much better understanding of what BB are all about.

The list of benefits experienced by users of BB are as follows: relaxation, awareness, concentration, improved memory, increased energy and creativity, reduction of stress, anxiety and pain, positive thinking etc. You really do owe it to yourself to have a listen.

Something I’d like to point out is that some Binaural Beats contain pre-programmed affirmations to help manifest a desired result. Although these affirmations can be heard, the exact content is not understandable at a conscious level. I would personally stay away from this type of subliminal messaging unless you yourself has created the spoken affirmations.

Our subconscious mind is like a sponge waiting to receive whatever we throw at it. It truly is so powerful so only feed it with your own positive affirmations. Alternatively leave the affirmations alone and  just hear the state frequency beats. Your mind will then do the rest.

Once in the zone then mentally affirm your desires to your subconscious! Like anything in life the best way to truly understand something is by taking action and listen to the effects of Binaural Beats for yourself.

With you headphones on, notice that the tones each produce a single sound in the form of a pulse. Then, remove either left or right headphone. You will notice that the pulsing sound has completely disappeared.

Put the headphone back and the tone can then be heard again. The actual pulsating sound being heard is due to your brain perceiving the third tone through its interpretation of the first two tones. That’s it.
